Discover the secrets of the Luangwa valley

The Mphata falls day trip is a fascinating journey to beautiful Mpatha hills on the borders of the Luangwa valley which are full of surprises. First we take you to the hills in the unspoiled countryside and on the way you enjoy the breathtaking view over the Luangwa valley at the viewpoint. In the hills we follow on foot the babbling stream that is hidden under a wild canopy of trees, branches and lianas followed by curious monkeys. There at the open spot we find the Mpatha falls that thunder down 50 meters deep. This waterfall is one of pristine beauty and is deeply hidden. And who can't resist taking a refreshing dip in a clear little lake at the bottom of the waterfall. From this beautiful jungle experience we drive in 20 minutes to another diamond in this area; the hot spring Kabilubilu. The hot water comes from a large rock that is about 20 to 30 feet long. and continues into the Kasenengwa River which continues its journey to the Luangwa River. The boiling water of about 1000 degrees Celsius that bubbles out of the basins and joins the cold running water that surrounds the rock. This place is locally called the "Angel Pool". At the boiling point, they have created a clean area where they tap drinking water daily, cook and fetch water for coffee and tea. Small colored fish and pike fish can also be found in some parts of the 'Angel Pool'. The site is believed to have been discovered inhabited by late Stone Age migrants, as stones shaped like knives were found here. The local villagers are always helpful and will explain you about their knowledge about the hotspring. We enjoy a lunch break here where we use the hot spring boiling water. After we are fully charged again, we continue to Chikowa Youth Development Centre. This Catholic mission project has become the largest educational project in the Mambwe district. Here you can buy extrodinary fine wood carving souvenirs made by local people. Here you will also dicover the beautifull vegetable gardens that grow and supply food allover the Mambwe district. We will take some time to talk with the students and find out what this place means for the area. From here we will find our way back to Mfuwe and drop you at the lodge or campsite. Proper walking shoes are recommended. Don't forget to bring swimming clothes and towels when you like to swim.
